Grass....
« on: January 24, 2013, 08:58 »
Hello,

I know this isnt really the place as its veggie growing(After i got some grass growing, ill start on asking about sprouts and why i cant seem to get anything but stringy weed type things), but

How would i go grow grass? quickly.. one side of my garden is a bare barren mud(snowy) patch..

I also plan on moving my gravel away, so need to get grass growing there again...

Any idea will be greatly appreciated

Throwing grass seed dont seem to work for me

Grass growing time is April and September. You've got time then to get ready for sowing in April by preparing the ground to make sure you get optimum germination.  You have to wait for the weather to improve though.  Pick the grass variety for your conditions.  Consider if you're in shade or what the grass is to be used for, eg no use having a fine mix if you're going to be playing games on it  :)

If one side of the garden is always a mud patch then maybe it's in deep shade and will never grow grass

hey compostqueen :)

Sadly.. that is not the case.. chickens fault and alot of garden DIY,

It was nice and green, till the rabbits n hens came, lol

OK, would it be best to grow it in a tray or straight outside?

I think CompostQueen was suggesting you sow it straight outside once you've prepared the ground, but you need to keep your chickens off it or it will never grow!

If you have trouble growing grass from seed you could think about laying turf, but you'd still need to keep the chickens off it until it was established and growing. :)

Yes there is no point relaying grass to immediately have chickens running round on it

The weather is too cold yet to be sowing grass but early to mid spring is fine

You want a perennial rye grass which is hard wearing and fast growing - not cheap mind!

Ground preparation can involve

1) mowing whats left down short
2) scarifying and/or aerating the ground
3) almost flooding the area you wish to re-seed, then let this water soak away
4) the sowing of seed - you can't really sow too much particularly if you want a think hard-wearing lawn
5) some people top dress, some don't
6) you might require some sort of protection. A germination sheet is the holy grail but again they are not cheap
7) water in well in the mornings or.evenings.

No grass won't germinate and grow all year round, neither will it grow with a tarpaulin on top as that makes it dark. You would need to fence it in some way but leave it open to the air, sun, weather...

I would avoid that if possible as you don't want huge clods of earth, perhaps rake the area at right angles just so you have some disturbed soil to sow into. This is part of what a scarifyer will do

Top dressing just means covering the seeds you have sown. I'd recommend a light covering of a sieved soil or even some organic seed compost if you have some lying round

In warm, moist conditions you will usually get germination within 10 days,  which can be lessened to 5 if you have germination sheets. If you are sowing in early spring it will take longer. How long these grass seedlings take to develop into a lawn will depend on a few things but with any luck you will need your first cut within 4 weeks

The yellow grass would have grown or been growing because it was already germinated, even though in a darkened situation under an inflatable pool. Grass seed won't germinate if it is too cold or dark..

It's not complicated in the slightest, nothing I have just described is difficult to do  :tongue2:

Spring or Autumn would be my advice
