Is this blight on my tomatoes?
« on: September 29, 2013, 00:58 »
Hi Everyone

Got a text from a friend on the plot telling me I had blight on my tomatoes. I've not heard of any other cases on the plot and the Blight map has no reported cases in Manchester. It only seems to be affecting 1 of my outdoor toms, so I'm just not sure.

Doesn't look definitely like it in my opinion - keep an eye on yours and neighbouring plots - time will tell.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Ours went over in a matter of days from fine to dead. Not convinced on yours. Search from other peoples pics and see what you think.

I am not sure either as mine have also looked like yours for the last five weeks.  Usually blight will kill them off immediately and spreads like wildfire but this doesn't appear to be following the usual blight traits.

If it really is only effecting one plant - then I'd get rid of the one, to save the others, cos it looks pretty suspect to me  :(

Thanks everyone. I wasn't too convinced myself. My friend is a keen and more experienced gardener, but that doesn't always equate to being right about everything!

I've destroyed the one plant and will check again on the plot today to see if there are any more signs and to harvest yet another hundred weight of Cobra beans...

Thanks for the feedback guys, I shall update you all with the results

cheers

Sue

went back down the plot on Sunday and all the remaining plants had developed the same symptoms, so I burnt the lot! It's such a shame. It's been the first year after 3 attempts of growing outdoor tomatoes that I've had any degree of success. I think that this is a sign!

There is no need to get frantic, some years are bad on some crops that's just how it goes. Cheer up! :D

Might it just be that the plants are suffering from cold nights?

It's been a really mixed year this year. Following the cool and damp of last year which gave me fabulous Pak Choi and other Chinese greens, I cultivated much more of this type expecting them to do well, but practically everything bolted because we had hot dry spells.

There was  also a massive burst pipe and leak on our plot so United Utilities had to cut off the water supply on several occasions.

Brassicas have been a disaster this year! first sowings were decimated by birds. I was genuinely surprised how much devastation they can cause! successional sowings were munched on by various critters. Using old net curtains is no substitute for a cage, but spinal surgery prevented me from building anything to ambitious or substantial.

However, I discovered Kohl Rabi this year and have had great success with Cobra beans, courgettes and cucumbers. I also realised how amazingly delicious fresh broad beans are!

All this is making me love this grow your own lark. What doesn't work makes much needed compost and humus for the soil, and what does work leads you to discover fantastic new recipes.  :D

Spoke too soon! Just got back from weekend away to find all tomato plants have now been destroyed by blight. Will have to rip them out and get rid of them.
