Just got me a 4-stroke Mantis
« on: February 23, 2009, 19:20 »
Looking forward to using it.. just need to add its oil and fuel and away we go.
I don't get to spend much time on the lottie during week cos of work so needed to get something to speed up me digging and weeding... the spade was taking just too long.
Anyone get one for similar reasons?

I tend to use mine for getting beds ready for seeding.Or digging deeper beds.  The most useful is turning over the chicken coop patch.  The hens love the lose earth for scratching and finding worms etc.

I personal dont use it for weeding as it in my opinion cut up the weeds and reseeded them.

Good piece of kit tho think mines two stroke
NOT ARF !

I understand the 4-stroke is quieter and smoother... we'll see.
I only have a 'half-plot' so not too bit to manage with a small cultivator.

I have the Electric model, very efficient at fining the soil down. Being on clay, it's still too wet to do any work on it. Better stay off it until it dries out more, if there's any sign of clogging, pack-up until later. The Mantis is a marvellous machine but the moisture needs to be right. The recent frost and snow has broken down the clay nicely. When it's dry enough it will make a very fine tilth.

Used it for 1st time today and it was ace - cut through soil like butter which hadn't been dug since last summer!  Easy to use and transport, Honda engine is very quiet and the only issue is with 'stones' that occasionally jam in between tines and gearing.  It is good at finding them!  My tip is take some 'grips' to pull stones out (I did).  Otherwise its a great little machine.
