I seem to have no problem in fact I have over sown and they took some thinning. This year I have red and white spring onions. As an experiment I leaft a short row in over the winter. There are still 3 onions in and thay are the size of the spring onions you see on Spanish markets.
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

... kept moist as well as fed.

You know already that over watering and over feeding is your main problem, Hubballi.

I've had 4 years of failures with them too, despite following DD's advise to the letter last year  :( I have a brand new packet of White Lisbon to try this year.

Funny enough I have more problems getting spring onions to germinate than parsnips

Likewise!
I had a pot of really good spring onions a few years ago but nothing since. I've tried in pots and in the ground but nothing :(
