Mine seem to have a taken a turn for the worse - one of my potatoes has definately developed a very small patch of mould, under the water level.

Is this normal?

If it really is only surface mould wash it off and change the water - if the flesh has actually started to rot you could be in trouble (but not as much as the potato!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Like Jay says, its most likely just a water mold. I neglected to mention that the container water needs regular changing to avoid problems like this. I'd recommend water changing every 2 weeks.

A gentle rinse under the tap over the potato, wash out the container, add fresh water, and you should be good to go.

Mine had gone the same way and I have rinsed the Potatoes down so not to damage the roots that have appeared. They are now sitting pretty in nice fresh water and clean cups.

Sweet potatoes really do need as much sun as you can give them. They'll tolerate a bit of shade, but only a couple of hours.

Thanks to the advice, I have been gently running my Sweet Potatoes under water about every week and changing the water, which seems to have stopped the mould.

I am please to report that during tonight's water change, two out of three of them have roots appearing - one of them was even the one I had convinced myself was upside down!
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.
