I have a root of ginger in my larder which has started to sprout.  Has anyone ever tried to grow it in the UK.  Can it be treated like a house plant and what is the season for growing it?

We all love ginger and this could bring a touch of the exotic into our growing portfolio.  What do you know?

She had exactly the same thing happen - nice sprout n the larder. So she planted it in a pot in the greenhouse. It grew a bit but then pegged it. so can't be a great deal of help!

I keep reading you can grow it in the UK inside but you have to let it go dormant and keep it on the dry side during the winter.  I've read this in two UK gardening books so it must be true. I think I killed mine by keeping it too dry, though   I think you can only harvest them once a year by cutting off a bit. They're rhizomes so it's not much different than some "bulbs"

Actually I had my ginger growing in our allotment for a long time before I rescued it from the slugs   When they're actively growing, they like lots of water, though.
