Brick built coop
« on: May 18, 2011, 19:00 »
Does anybody know, or can offer an opinion please?  Is a brick built coop less likely to suffer with red mite or is just as prone as a wooden coop?

Not 100% sure but i would imagine they are just as likely to get red mite, although not as warm as wood, bricks absorb and hold heat which i would imagine would be ideal for red mite.  Plus bricks arent completely smooth and have lots of small crevices foir the mite to hide and breed.

If finished with a smooth render and painted a light colour so they were easily spotted, a quick hose out would sort it surely?

If the wall was double skinned with no gaps for the mites to get into, then it would be warm and snug in winter etc, and it would definitely be fox proof  :D

You would never be able to seal up a brick wall to be mite proof.  They are very tiny and could colonise the smallest cracks and crevices.  I can't think a brick coop is a good idea and I've never heard of anyone using brick sucessfully for chx.

Thanks everyone.  It was just an idea as we have lots of bricks laying around and OH is going to build a new coop.  We did say that there would be lots of crevices for the pesky little devils  :tongue2: but thought that brick might not be as warm as wood for them.

As I say, it was just an idea....... I think a brick built BBQ is probably the best idea......  :D :D
