Hi everyone
These are some of my rescue hens taken on day one -arrival day. I will post more as the weeks go by, hopefully showing improvement in their condition and frame of mind.http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w249/mother-hubbard/DSCF1630-1.jpg http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w249/mother-hubbard/DSCF1629.jpg
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!

Thank you for posting the pictures Viv. My children have seen them and couldn't believe it when I explained why the chickens looked like that. They'll never buy battery eggs that's for sure.
Well done for taking on rescue birds. I'm still new to chickens so don't feel I'd know what I was doing with them. Maybe in the future.....I look forward to seeing their progress :)

Thanks for the pics as upsetting as they are.  I find it hard to credit mans inhumanity to such innocent creatures that look to us for their survival.

Well at least here are a few chucks that have a decent future to look forward to, spare a thought for all the rest not so lucky.

I've been toying with the idea of taking a few rescued birds when I have gained a bit more experience at looking after them.  The problem is keeping rain on ones emotions I am limited to space in my pocket hankerchief of a garden i wouldn't want to take on them only to be stessed by lack of space and over enthusiastic children.

Though I am sure I could manage a couple at least.

I was going to say maybe the look so rough because they are molting .. but that is way beyond molting! what a horrible sight. I wonder what these people did to them! :(

these were the best pictures. I could not put up the others as it is too distressing. Three of the hens have no feathers on their bodies at all and look like they are ready for the oven. I am hoping that they will pick up - time will tell.d
Went down the field this morning 6am and let them out into a pen. Today seven came out straight away and went to their feed trough. The others are still a bit scared to venture into what to them is the unknown. Apparently they never see the light of day, they are kept in artificial light at high temperatures, in cages with no room to walk around in. After 12 months they are sent to slaughter unless the rescue people can provide homes for them. Go on have a go, you can take one otr two, it doesn't have to be a lot. The hens have everything to gain from you taking them.
Contact the Battery Hen Trust. On their website are details of all local co-ordinators.
You wont regret it.  :D  :D

:(  :(  :(  :( The pics are truly shocking.
So is it legal to keep chickens in such appalling health?
Forgot to say - well done you for giving them a new happy home  :D
