You wanna make Castlemaine XXXX?  Just pee in a bucket every night!

I've been thinking the same, I used to make my own as a teenager and I do like a few at weekends, as you say the price and also the fact that bottles aren't reused in UK like they are in eg Germany.  Keeping equipment clean is important, as is being able to wait for it to mature!  Don't be tempted to add sugar to get the strength though otherwise you end up with something tasting like Newkie Brown.  :puker: Also the water type and quality is important - eg add gypsum for 'hard' waters for bitters and salt for 'soft' waters for stout and mild.  I used to boil up the malt extract and hops, experiment a bit and most of it was fine.
