Peas. Know your enemy....perhaps
« on: June 29, 2018, 17:09 »
I've had a very poor year with peas. They all have very little growth and the Early Onward are flowering at 18" tall. Thats those that have managed to grow at all.
A couple of rows have been very badly eaten. The remaining stalks are about 3" tall. A photo is attached.
Does anyone have a suggestion about the culprits. The damage to the stalks seems to me to be too much for slugs? Does anyone recognise the signs as damage by slugs / mice / pigeons / rabbits?
Any help would be appreciated.

I had similar problem, noticed rabbit dropping on plot so assumed the were the culprits.
Put 3 ft barrier around the peas & sowed some more now have them up to 4 ft high.

Pigeons would be my guess.  I cover my peas with bird netting.
If the weather is dry they need regular watering to keep them growing.

I re-netted my peas as the pigeons have kept up their attacks.

My pea plants have grown well this year yet the peas are nowhere near as sweet as they have been every other year, though they be the same variety. I've even left some on my plate at dinner, that's not like me at all. I usually try and eat anything I've grown out of stubbornness seeing the effort it's taken to get on my plate.
