Horse muck/. Cover or not
« on: April 22, 2018, 22:24 »
Just filled two wooden compost bins with horse muck ready to apply to the beds next autumn as it's far too fresh now.  Should I cover them with plastic  or will they be ok as they are?

Happy to be corrected by someone wiser than I, but understand you should cover it to prevent the rain washing the nitrogen out of the rotting muck.

Although composting requires some moisture to help it along, it's hard to control the amount if the pile is left open to the elements, so best to cover it, watering if necessary.

(Fast composting also requires air, but your bins will allow for that if they are of slatted construction.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Also, if (IF) we have a long hot spell of weather your manure will dry out on the surface if not covered: dry stuff does not rot down

When I could get fresh manure, either horse or cow's, I used to cover it.  The next season it had rotted down into a pile of beautiful, rich, black compost material.
