Mini Plum tomatoes
« on: April 11, 2018, 18:51 »
I've given a couple of tiny plants with only Mini Plum on the label. Anyone know if these are bush or standard staking tomatoes?

Probably ex Lidl or Aldi as new plants are arriving daily in these stores now.

Thanks

I grow a variety called "Cherry Roma" which I just let do their thing and never side shoot... get loads of lovely sweet tomatoes from the plants.

I've grown what are called mini plum tomatoes inthae past and they are cordon or indeterminate
So tie to a cane and pinch out side shoots.

But you could always plant some in a hanging basket and let them tumble.
I do that with many of the cherry and similar pear type tomatoes that are cordon and they produce very well.
Just a small wigwam of stakes in the basket to 9 inches. Then let each plant as they reach the top of the stake tumble down and over the basket with some garden wire loosely tied around the stem for strength. But do remove the side shoots.

Mini plum tomatoes, without a variety label could be cordon or bush  I wouldn't pinch out any of the side shoots till I was sure one way or the other.
Let the plant grow until you see the first lot of flowers. If the stem continues to grow upwards past the flower truss, it is a cordon and will need to grow it up a string/cane and you should now pinch out all the side shoots.
If the upward growth stops with the flower truss then it is a bush and you can leave all the side stems in place for maximum fruit set.
