I've made beetroot chutney successfully a few times recently. The recipe is mainly beetroot, apples, onions, white wine vinegar and sugar.
I'm thinking of replacing the apples with pears. Do you think this will mean disaster, or should it work?

I think that should work.  They are not so different, although the pears may be a little sweeter depending on the variety you use

Hi Steve - could you point me towards where you got your original recipe from for Beetroot chutney with apples? I can't seems to find a good one, and don't like it with Ginger or Horseraddish - too hot !
