my poor girl
« on: August 08, 2014, 08:50 »
my poor little dog Lola has had to have her cruciate ligament removed and torn cartilage repaired in her rear leg

she had the same thing done 2 years ago on the other leg - apparently its common if 1 leg goes so will the other

I feel so guilty putting her through it all again but there was no choice other than having her PTS  :(

she is 5 years old so has some good years ahead of her yet so hopefully it will have been worth it

she is feeling very sorry for her self at the moment  :(

Oh poor Lola, looks like she has chosen a good spot to recuperate though  :)

aww poor Lola, she will be fine in a few weeks, in the mean time she will milk it for all it's worth and give you those puppy dog eyes to make you feel guilty enough to buy her lots of tasty treats  :)

I sympathize fully,  :( Rosie  had a tumour on her liver, with effects of the operation to remove it gave her an inflamed pancreas, she was so poorly I wondered if I had done the right thing as she was 12, in no time she bounced back and had more energy that ever and another 4 of our years, it will be worth the pain for you and her
:D I garden therefore I am

been back to the vets today post op check

he said the wound is healing nicely but he doesn't expect her to walk on it until the stitches come out as they are very tight as the wound is a major trauma

her ligament was shot again cartilage was torn and the bone has arthritis - same as her other leg which she had operated on last year  :(

I asked him why a little cross breed is having such problems and he said it's just bad luck - on a positive note she should regain 80% use in both her legs and live a happy normal life

she's cuddled up with me on the sofa right now  ;)

I had one dog have a crusiate ligament go.  She had it operated on and we followed the vets advise in recooperation to the dot.  She recovered  brilliantly.  We had no more problems with her at all.  It did not affect her in any way.  The other leg remained healthy.  We think she damaged it running about.  she did not have arthritus either.  Your dog will not feel sorry for itself once the anathestic has worn off.  Your job now is to ensure that she doesnt bounce around for a while. :tongue2:

Once her stitches are out and she is able to take gentle exercise it might help her to go for hydrotherapy sessions, this will help build her leg muscles up without putting any weight on it.

if you go to hydro check the qualifications of the therapist, sadly anybody can set up as a canine hydrotherapy centre without any qualifications. They should during the therapy session check your dogs heart beat and even their gums and don't be surprised if your dog is only in the pool for 5-10 minutes for the first few sessions. My two Newfies go every 2 weeks to build their muscles up (poor upbringing with their previous owner) and they are only on 15 minutes a time each.

That is quite some scar, but she looks so relaxed and comfy in that first picture  :D

I'm sure Lola will be bouncing back fast now and you will be trying to slow her down in a few days  :)

So pleased to see her looking well and happy. She looks like she's wondering what mischief she can get up to next. :)
