Title: Sharpening secateurs
Post by: Elaine G on December 11, 2017, 00:24
I recently watched Monty Don sharpening his secateurs with what looked like a small oilstone.

Does anyone know where I can get one please. All the websites I have looked at have larger ones - 8inch seems to be the going rate.

Unfortunately I have a whole collection of secateurs (some inherited) that need some TLC.

Thanks
Elaine

Hi Not sure where you live but my husband would sharpen them,he spent 32yrs working as a blacksmith and farrier,he would sharpen things from knives to as big as road drills,we are in north wales.
If thats no good do you have a stermat shop near you they sell small oil stones  which are much easier to handle.Lillileaf

This site has a whole range of blade care options, including mini versions.  I quite often buy OH pressies from here.  They are very good  :)

Your local fishing tackle shop will stock them. They are used as hook sharpeners

Yes. My brother has an excellent little one which is ideal to keep in the allotment bag for a quick touch up of secateur blades from time to time as well as an annual run over

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I would never have guessed about the fishing shop, so I will head for the nearest one when I can do so safely. Hopefully snow will be gone by tomorrow

Otherwise I have one in my Greenman bushcraft basket if I cannot find something locally.
