Title: Forum Upgrade
Post by: John on December 08, 2017, 12:41
We're planning on uploading an upgrade to the forum tonight and will be offline for a bit - maybe an hour, maybe longer depends how things go.

It's been a really long haul - we originally planned on it being finished by February!! The main points are that it is mobile friendly and uploading pictures should be a lot easier.

The search system now works properly and quickly - the quick search box is still there but for a more advanced search follow the search link in the menu.

It's been extensively tested on the development server and hopefully you won't have any problems.

Certainly has a lot more features thanks John. Anyway it's done for February - 2018. You're ahead of schedule looking at it like that.  ;)

Not liking the light green text against the yellow zebra stripes for list of posts.
Its not easy to read. Would like the text black.
What's with the occasional one in pink? That's just very hard to read.

Just done an edit, know I found out how.

Also.
Seeing a reply button, but not the ability to quote a post.
Or come to that edit a post.

Click on the action button on the right-hand side, quote and edit are in there.

That shows that it is a 'sticky' topic.

Ok, thanks, did not see that action button shoved over there.
Think those action would fit better next to reply just as text.

Oh those sticky things (always hated those, just get in the way), never noticed them in the list of threads before, well the unread type ones. Looks odd interspersed like that and that ghastly pink colour that I cannot read the text on anyway.

One other thing, the quote text is tiny, should be same text size as a normal post.
I have good eyesight, but struggle to read it being that small.

Thanks very much for your input, Lettice

We'll see what we can do

Another thing to consider - in a thread when the details of the poster come up on the LHS, their location is no longer included.  It might not matter for some things, but when discussing the weather (big thing today) or what to grow etc etc it is really useful to know if the poster is in Inverness or Ipswich.

Thanks Madcat  - I believe the display of profile location is at the top of John's tweak-list.  ;)

Yep - it is. It's funny, we spent ages going through stuff on the test server, getting things to function properly but missed a few obvious things like location.

Always the case with new systems.  I also have the scars ....     Sod's Law will get you somehow....

But you done good.  Don't forget that when sorting out the annoying wrinkles.  99.9% is running lovely.  And it would embarrass the rest of us if you were to show off as perfeck.   ::)

I too am finding the colours a bit pale to read clearly plus the text seems considerably smaller. But all the rest so far so good 😊

We've now finished the last round of tweaks and fixes -

Notes

When these forums started there were no smartphones or tablets to speak of. Now 40% of our visitors are using a mobile device and personal computer users are predicted to be in the minority soon. The  last version of the forum catered for mobile users with a very basic version that was difficult to use and didn't even have the same colours.

Now the forums should give a similar visual experience across different platforms - smartphones, tablets, desktop computers and be usable on all those platforms. This does, I'm afraid, involve some compromises.

For example, the striping effect on topic lists makes them far easier to differentiate and navigate for mobile users and many desktop users will find it helpful.

Text size is (on a desktop) actually the same and slightly bolder giving better visual contrast. If you're finding things appear smaller you can change this easily. In Firefox go to view >> zoom >> zoom in (or Ctrl+1) in Google Chrome open the tools (the icon with 3 vertical dots to the right of the address bar) and go to zoom. In Microsoft Internet Explorer look for the gear wheel icon to access zoom tools.

Future Changes

There will be no more alterations to the software unless something is broken, of course.

We will be making some alterations to topic boards soon to simplify things a little.

That's all folks!

Thanks for the changes.
Quote text is great and easily readable now.
The colour changes on the stickies posts lists looks better too.

Is it just me or are the Gardeners Diaries not working correctly?

So take mumofstig's diary from example. She has made 48 posts but you can only see the first post on each each page. I have tried this in both Firefox and Chrome and it's the same.

All other sections appear to be okay.

They seem to be working OK - perhaps something was going on with the server when you looked. We've had a few problems with the new server, mainly configuration issues, but that's a new one.
If you go back and it's still only showing one post, try refreshing your browser in case it's cached.

Hi John,

That's strange as it's still happening for me. I have refreshed the browser whilst looking at a specific diary page and also cleared all the browsing data in it's entirety. It doesn't make any difference.

I've now tried Firefox ESR, Firefox Quantum, IE10 and Chrome. They are all the same for me so I'm puzzled

I wonder if the other forum users are seeing this?

Thanks for your time,
Paul.

Hi all.
I'm seeing the same thing  as ryetek except I think the other posts are there but page formatting is pushing them all to the right side.
I can see a broken vertical black line that if copied and pasted into notepad reveals the "hidden" posts.
Apologies I would have added a pic but cannot find the attachment button.

Hi John,

I don't know if this helps you but if you look in the console of the Chrome Developer Tools there is a Google Ads error when you look at the posts in someones diary that you don't see in any other topic for any other section. Maybe this error is causing the page to render incorrectly.

I also see what jcbuz1970 has reported. Also the footer that's on the bottom of every other page in the forum is missing (but only when you view a gardeners diary). I was also going to add a pic but cannot figure out how to add attachments.

Again many thanks for your time for such a great website and forum.

Thanks,
Paul.

We're well beyond my ability level now so I'll ask my super tech wizard to fix things. He's pretty busy so might be a few days. Thanks for telling me.
Reminds me a little of the 3rd Godfather film.. "Just when you think you're out, they suck you back in!"

When posting you should see a box where you can drag and drop photos along with a Browse button which is the same as in the previous version. See image attached.

Hi John,

Thanks for the information on how to post pictures but I don't see the "Add Files..." option under the "More Options" button as per your screenshot. I do see 3 checkboxes that are not in your screenshot however namely "Notify me of replies", "Don't use smileys" and "Return to this topic".

With regards to the original issue I'm now at home using my own PC via a different Internet provider and see the exact same thing across various browsers. I've also tried my wife's iPad and it's the same. Refreshing the page and totally clearing the cache make no difference.

Incidentally if I use my mobile phone then I can see all the posts perfectly (and thats connected to the same network as my PC and my wife's iPad). Also, using my mobile phone, I can see the "Add Files..." option too.

I hope all this information help you out!

Thanks,
Paul.

Right - we tested things quite extensively and then the moderators had a play on the non-live copy before we went live
However....
As admin or moderator we have higher permission levels so the problems you've seen we don't. I've just logged in as John Test Account (normal member) and the add files option isn't there :(
The short version of the diary thing is that
Quote
There was an issue with an unclosed div tag which only occurred on topics where a user was logged in but did not have permissions to post a reply. -
Since admins can always reply, and on 99% of topics users can reply too, we had never seen it happen.
Although members can reply to topics they can't reply to individual diary threads
I will now kick myself

Once again Tom has sorted it - for some reason only admin and possibly mods can post attachments on this board but you can post on ordinary boards. We must have had a reason to set that - just wish I could remember why!!!!!

So I did see a social link bar mentioned but nothing about it. I assume that is the strip I am seeing on the left side of my 10'' tablet screen, it's not a problem on my bigger laptop screen but have to dodge it to see the text on the far left as it plants itself over it. It is the row of little boxes isn't it ?
I do see you on F/b and followed your link there to get your site on my tablet and thought that might be why but followed the link from your email and it's still there.
How can I hide it from my screen please ?

Sorry, it's a fixed feature. There's probably a workaround but I've not got a tablet (apart from the ones from the doctor) so don't know how to do it.

Did that and it's still there, it pops up right over the login square, it wouldn't be quite so bad if it was on the right! I'm sure it wasn't there before the revamp, I would have noticed

The problem is that there are so many ways to view the web - from teeny tiny mobile phone screens to 60 in. TVs. The last upgrade was .. challenging... the thing is to actually please everybody is well nigh impossible. Change something for one system and it affects another as well.

The technology has gone from the Wright brothers to space shuttles in a matter of 20 years.  I decided about 10 years ago to give up trying to keep up - so whilst I understand the principles of web design, the details I leave to a great chap in Hastings. He fits me in around his main client who is in LA!!

Yes I do understand, as someone 70 years young I look back in wonder at what has happened in my lifetime and am only just clinging on to the bits of tech that I have learned.
What cannot be cured must be endured.
