When to pull these spuds?
« on: October 11, 2018, 00:00 »
We have some spuds which have grown out of a pile of dumped muck and strimmings from when we took our plot on in mid may... they've been in flower for  a g e s  and have even produced those poisonous tomato like growths on the haulms. Thing is, the foliage hasn't started to die back yet and the flowers are still going strong.

Should I leave them a bit or could I lift them now?

Yes you could. You might find the potatoes are quite small now but if you leave them they’ll probably get bigger. Depends if you want to clear that area now.

the growing season is slowing now and any frost will blacken the haulms. you could lift them or leave up to you. in my opinion the longer left more chance of slug damage. have you somewhere to store them if you do rise them.

There are only a few plants so I was just gonna nosh 'em to be honest. ;)

I think I'll have a feel around for one in the mound and if it's a fair size, I might just pull them up.
