stored pumpkins/squash
« on: December 19, 2010, 15:09 »
Just a reminder really to check your harvest for signs of rot starting :(

Ive just been out to the brick lean-to where I stored some of my pumpkins, and noticed that 2 of them have some soft patches starting, I suspect they are getting too cold!
I've brought them in and will make soup tomorrow to freeze, and keep a good eye on the others.

The squash in the spare bedroom (unheated, but not as cold as the lean-to!) have no sign of rot  :D

Finally got round to the "autumn" clear-up in the relative let up in the weather last week, and hiding in the remains of the plant I found a Winter Festival squash in perfect condition!

Can't pretend it was huge, especially after peeling and de-seeding, but I couldn't let such a survivor go on the compost heap!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I never peel my Winter Squash before cooking, as it wastes too much flesh.

That depends on just how thinly you are able to peel them :tongue2:  :D

Mine in store in the shed are all gonners   I was able to use two but the rest were beyond use. The potatoes are ruined and many of the onions. Shallots have fared better

Lost half of mine and they were in the kitchen. They were sat on the kitchen floor (kitchen is more or less unheated) and rotted from the base upwards. I'm assuming that I should have turned them or sat them on a rack.

Brought my spuds in to the warm to save them and they will go back out into the garage when the temp is less cold.

All of my Onions have frozen, does this mean I have lost them? How will they be when they thaw?

Thanks FB

Been out to check on my squashes (all 5 of them)!  Glad to say they are all hale and hearty,  spuds not so, been using them but having to cut so much away.  I think it's the compost for the last of 'em.  Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

They'll rot very quickly once they start to thaw. Can you cook up something with them whilst still frozen?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
