Help/advice needed regarding petrol strimmer
« on: July 11, 2011, 18:55 »
Hi

Im hoping someone can help.

I have a Challenge xtreme 26cc petrol strimmer thats been sat for 6 months. Today i decided to tackle a large patch of weeds and cut them down to size. The strimmer kicked on the 2nd pull, and runs ok on tick over. But as soon as i rev the engine to get it to cutting speed it dies! I have cleaned the plug and tryed adjusting the screw regarding mixture?? But still no joy! The choke has 3 settings, cold start, middle? and warm start. Kicking it on cold start works every time, but even moving the choke to warm start (while running) causes the engine to cut out.

Does anyone have any idea's as to how i can sort it out? Or should i take it somewhere to get overhauled/repaired??

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like fuel starvation, could be a blockage in the carb or in fact a number of different problems.... If you're not confident to take the engine to bits :D and it does come to that, you might need to take it to someone to strip down for you. In the meantime, I've moved your question to the Equipment Shed board for the strimmer experts to see it. :)

Oh, and welcome! :D

No problem, don't worry about it! :) Hopefully, you'll get some helpful suggestions on here soon which allow you to get your machine running again without taking it to bits. :D

check the filter bit at the bottom of the fuel tank, also check your fuel pipes, if they are rotting they will give all sorts of hassle.
you could take the fuel pipe off the carb and blow through the wrong way which should clear any blockages, if you are fussy, join a spare bit of clean pipe to the end you are about to blow down. also check the priming bulb for leaks or splits, I had one split and it just wouldnt run properly..

Two stroke fuel goes off very quickly, the small amount left in the carb has blocked the tiny jets.
You may some times get away with running the machine with the choke on a fraction, this should enable you to rev the machine normally. Quite often you will find that this will help to clear out the "varnish" that has formed as the petrol has gone off.

We have a Stihl strimmer and blower which die if you floor them them straight after starting.

They have to be left on tick over for about 30 seconds before pulling the trigger otherwise they konk out, which I don't know might be the same case with yours, just have to give it time to warm up.

We have another strimmer and chainsaw which hadn't been used for 2 years, with fuel still in them and they started fine, so unless your strimmer has had a rough time doing nothing then it should work ok.

Hi, I have the same strimmer and have created a PDF of the manual. It is too large to post on-line here. Let me know how and will email it direct to you if it helps.
