.... just acquired an allotment and just joined the site

                Hello all!

I've been engrossed in reading some of the threads and was so relieved to hear about piddling in the compost (thought it would be a pain to haul myself and three little children back up the hill to home ... now we don't have to, we'll wee in the shed, although I wonder just how much wee a compost can take!)

I've bought a relevent book but it's too advanced and mindblowing for the likes of me. Can anyone recommend a smashing, simple, step by step veg/fruit book? Laurence Hill has been mentioned to me, but it's out of print.

Hi there,

seems tobe the day for people joining !

I use an old readers digest book 'the gardening year' that i found in a charity shop. But my father-in-law has had an allotment for years, and ive studied the environment as part of my degree, so with that and the guys and girls on here i muddle along nicely

I won't enter the pee debate. We've no lavs on our site.
I've found Grow Your Own Vegetables by Joy Larkom to be good. And Allotment Gardening An Organic Guide for Beginners by Susan Berger. It's worth reading Alan Titchmarsh's How to be a Gardener as well, if you can get it out of the library because it's dear and not all of it is relevant. Try the library anyway - if you find a book you like you can always buy it later.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Go make  a bid, it is a terrific book.   (I know John's not such a big fan of Mr F.)

I know exactly how you feel. Im also doing an OU degree. Spent most of the night revising astronomy.

Im the opposite - cant sleep until late, often 2 or so in morning, but have trouble getting up.

I'll be asleep most of today, so no working in the plot for me.

Heading towards BSc Molecular Science, plenty of environmental stuff and the astronomy, but the hard level 3 stuff is all chemistry.

Doing S282 astronomy and S278 earths physical resources this year, but then thats all the level 2 done, just level 3 to finish. Exams on 19th and 20th next month, not looking forward to them.
