pop-hole ramp angle?
« on: December 04, 2006, 13:31 »
Simple quick question, what angle should the ramp from a pop-hole to the ground be at?

Ive now added the legs to my henhouse (next time remind me to start by building the legs and base, what a bl00dy job!) and i dont want me chooks to have to parachute down.

Does it matter?  Ours are quite near the ground, so the chooks just hop up the couple of inches, but Hugh F-W on River cottage had his at quite an angle and HIGH!!!  He had to teach them to climb up, but they got the hint pretty quickly

Good question Karl, about 2ft roughly now if put the legs on it. So twice the height, i make a guess thats about 30deg, seems reasonable enough.

Oh yes i saw those tall things he did on posts! safe from foxes i guess if the ladders taken away, bet they wobble in the wind

cheers

Hi
Just a word of warning! We had our henhouse 2foot of the ground on stilts-and Sunday morning went out and found our henhouse completely upside down - incredibly the chooks were fine -but we felt awful. We have now bolted the henhouse to the base and reduced the height slightly. Anyhow the gangplank was at around 40 degree angle and they had no probs. Wil post pics of our upsidedown henhouse when I work out how to upload photos!!

the legs on mine are 1ft, just enough that i can see if any rats is under there, and swiftly terminate their existence.

Im pretty up on what wind speeds can shift what, and i think it'l be fine. Its blumin' heavy!

here's a helpful suggestion - ask your chickens what angle they'd like?!  Nice looking robustly constructed chook-house Zak.

Ive not got the chooks yet or i would ask. I asked Daniel, Freddy and the two boys George and Peppa, but they were too busy munching carrots to provide an opinion. And the canaries marlon and emma were asleep.

Fancy coming over and lifting it down the garden for me?

Nope - it's gonna have to get some wheels! then it can become the trojan horse of chicken coops!

Dont think wheels will work, think it needs tracks!

Its very innovative how ive built it, lots of features

might bive the RAF a call and see if i can borrow a helicopter to lift it into position,

still, it wont wobble when me chooks is having a wild party

How about following the sedan chair principle and giving it temporary arms?

Thats a good idea! So long as i can get some poles long enough. Im considering if i can put some rope handles on,

its liftable from the base now at least, so long as a third person stabilises it. Got to finish the paint job today, so long as the rain holds off

Roll it on logs, thats how we move the heavy boats, ropes on the front to pull and log rollers underneath, grab them as they come out the back and put them back to the front.

would have worked until i put the legs on!

i think im going to put some rope handles on. Another problem with rolling is that theres two steps to go up first.

It just needs some brute force and ignorance, so will move it when the brother in law is next here!
