growing more fruit in the garden blackberrys??
« on: October 05, 2007, 13:32 »
as we have rubarb, apples and pears i thought the next ones should maybe be blackberrys..

does anyone know much about them?

im looking for a heavy croping plant because im limited on planting area i could have less plants. I think thornless would be better for me but not a "must be thornless"

also as low cost as as possible.

i stock fruit netting so have as much avalible as i want.

i was maybe thinking that i should wire up a frame to grow them up and along, tieing them to train them along?

does anyone know the recomended planting/spacings for them?

many thanks ibn advance for your help

go through a couple sites and catalouges that supply the bushes , great idea to train them along wires and posts .makes for ease of picking pruning etc . try to get an early variety and a later one  planting is 4ft apart id put 2 in a 12 foot row of wire etc, they will grow towards the sun if you want them to but i would suggest you put them east to west so that you get full sun on the growing side ... cost is what your p[repared to pay  so hope that helps matey ,
still alive /............

Blackberries aren't something which springs to mind when you are "limited on planting area".  TBH, I personally wouldn't give them garden space but then there are loads growing wild around here.  Your call, of course

thanks munty,

it just gives me a ldea of what to do etc.

wg,

i was thinking blackberrys for crumbles ect to go with apples, all the areas that had blackberrys growing  when i was a kid are now all sprayed so they dont grow, i spock to one guy who said it was all down to the fact dog walkers could get hurt by them, so again its down to the world going mad on h&s!

is there anything you would recomend to me that would give me a worth while crop?

the other idea i had was to put a row in along the back of my plot, set some posts in about 6ft high and wire it up with fencing wire, if i could grow then up-wards i wouldnt realy loose any growing room for my veg

thanks

nathan

What about raspberries? I have never grown any soft fruit, but just suggested this as an alternative, as I love raspberries.

Jam them, jelly them, but IMHO best with thick cream, especially clotted Cornish.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Definitely!
You can also make them into pies and a juice for drinking. We often make half raspberries/half apples for pies to stretch out the harvest if it's been poor, and it's still delicious.

We are pretty fond of oatmeal up here and raspberry cranachan is simply excellent

Can see why you like the cranachan, WG. But what on earth is medium oatmeal  :?

Not porage oats (which are rolled), but oatmeal (which is simply ground up oats).  Medium refers to the coarseness of the grind.

Try a specialist grocery store or get some of your rellies to take some over for you.

And there is a mistake in the recipe link I posted.  "Serves 4" ... pah!!!  No chance.
