Home-made polytunnel
« on: May 04, 2009, 15:22 »
Hi everyone.

Just after some advice about polytunnels.... my husband and brother-in-law are going to make one but they're planning on making it square.  Is that okay?  All polytunnels  I've seen are arched so I wondered if there was a reason, other than it being easier to construct?  Thanks for any advice  :D

If you mean a thing you can walk into, then tunnels are curved so you can use one sheet of plastic over the hoops. Square ones would need a join, or the plastic would tend to rip along the sharp edge. I've got a greenhouse made from rigid plastic sheets though and that is just a big cube with a sloping roof.
The old blokes on my site build tunnels from scrap wood and plastic piping and they seem to work quite well. I feel slighly responsible as I showed them this (or something similar - there's loads about): http://www.freewebs.com/alanparkin/apps/photos/album?albumid=3853592
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

If the roof was flat it would start collecting rain water and would put a lot of extra weight on the structure.
