What potatoes are we growing this year?
« on: February 13, 2010, 21:08 »
Its my first year, so Im going for a mix - a couple of shetland black as an experiment(and because I was given them free), 15 international kidney as second early new/salad spuds and 20 blue danubes as my (moderately) blight resistant variety. I was just wondering what everyone else was planning and why? 8)

I got mine today, first time grower, went for Charlotte, Pentland Javelin and Rocket (not sure about rocket, have heard they don't have a lot of flavour!?) Might get some king edwards for maincrop

First Earlies:

Pentland Javelin - a staple, if all else fails, these have never let me down
Lady Christl - a lovely consistently shaped spud

Second Earlies:

Charlotte - Unbeatable as a salad spud
Kestrel - Great tasting large spuds. Store well for a second early

Main Crop:

Rooster - 'cos I got them post free from T & M & looked nice -
Ambo - great cropper of large bakers. Desiree/Cara cross - good parents
Desiree - see above
Sarpo Mira - Huge blight resistance. Not the greatest taste, but if others fail, they are there, but I'm keeping an eye on Sentanta as a sucessor.
Highland Burgundy Red - Well, you have to have a novelty don't you? Spotted these when I went to pick up my order. Red fleshed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

kestrel (did well last year and fantastic for chips)
sarpo mira (hopefully wont be decimated by worms and slugs like my maris piper last year)

international kidney
annabelle
king edward

And for me the best potato by miles in terms of flavour for mashing and roasting: Vivaldi. Nothing still has come close for beating it in terms of taste. Nutty, sweet-ish, great depth of flavour..a true gourmet potato.

Trying a few different varieties as well as growing in buckets for show spuds.

Earlies: Foremost and Homeguard

2nds: Charlotte, Shetland Black and Blue Danube

Main: Cara which do really well on my soil.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Vales Emerald, Annabelle, Anya, Yukon Gold, Rooster, Red Cara, Lady Balfour.

Last year I grew International Kidney (very, very disappointed), Charlotte, Edzell Blue, King Edward, Pink Fir Apple, Highland Burgundy
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

A lot of people are disappointed with International Kidney. They expect to get something akin to Jersey Royals, but sadly we've not got Jersey soil and climate.

Ah well, we've got a pretty special climate down here in south Dorset - maybe I'll get lucky!

The overall yield was poor, and the flavour non-existent (mind you I have never found them as 'special' as some folks and actually prefer Charlotte)
