Hen now cockerel
« on: January 05, 2013, 13:59 »
Dear Lovely chicken ppl, can any of you help?  I lost my last exbatt girlie just a short time ago and decided to get some *normal* chooks.  A girl from work knew of a farm closing down and got me what i though were threee beautiful new girls.  However one has started to crow.  I'm now desperate to find a new home, but no one can help.....Does anyone have any suggestions please.

You have always been so good assisting in the past with advise.  Really not sure what to do. :(

Supply a nest-box and expand your flock?

(Ear-plugs for the neighbours or half-a-dozen fresh eggs to keep them sweet)

You can tell I don't keep chooks can't you!  ::)

I had a similar problem when Sylvana had to be renamed overnight as Sylvio when she grew wattles and a comb almost overnight. Do you really need to rehome him? I have found that having a cockerel really keeps the hens in order and they all cluck around the garden quite happily watched over by him. Admittedly you do need tolerant neighbours particularly when he joins in the midnight celebrations at new year...).  Fortunately my neighbours either keep chickens, have double glazing or feel it contributes to the 'rustic' charm!
Some breeders may be interested if he is a handsome boy but I had a problem as Sylvio became very aggressive (attacking the mother in law much to my and the OH's amusement! Although it did become rather scarey and I had to use the bin lid as a shield to go anywhere near the coop). Then no way can you rehome him if this happens. I hadn't the heart to have him put down as he was a glorious cockerel and in the end he succumbed to Mareks and I had to have him put down.
It's a really difficult problem so sympathies if you really need to rehome him...

Unfortunately my neighbours already moan about my rosey hens when they are laying. He is a beautiful boy. A silver laced Wyandotte, very young, very calm & friendly.

You could advertise him on here or if you freecycle allows animals you could try that. If a zoo or petting farm is handy they might be interested.

be careful and check out the person who takes your cockerel - cock fighting is an evil sport that is still around.
Advertise on here in the poultry swap shop.
Staffies are softer than you think.
