where to buy spring bulbs?
« on: August 25, 2012, 20:17 »
I am starting to think of ordering up some bulbs for planting this autumn.  Does anyone have any top places they would recommend?  I am looking for quite a large quantity of alliums, crocus, tulips and narcissi.  I know it is going to cost a lot, so looking for the best value around.

When you say large quantities, do you mean by the hundred or thousand? Some of the main suppliers such as T&M will sell these quantities, but you might be better going to a local nursery depending on how many you need. I don't know, even roughly, where you are to advise any more on nurseries. You could edit an approximate location into your profile, it would be helpful in such situations. :)

I noticed wilko's have a huge range of spring bulbs at reasonable prices - have a gander at their website!

i am probably in 100s rather than thousands of each variety and live in Glasgow, so not sure of any good local nurseries.

Had a look at peter nyssen and they look very good value.  Has anyone bought from them, and are they good quality bulbs?

I know THIS COMPANY is a very reputable trader. I don't know if they supply bulbs, but you could make a call. If they don't, they'll know who does in the area. :)

Thanks for all the tips.  I might look into Mclarens nurseries for next years bedding plants, but unfortunately they don't seem to sell bulbs.

Yes and yes to your 2 questions  :)  I used to buy from them when I worked for a small nursery and we potted up our own bulbs to sell each spring.  Have bought from them as a retail customer since and always been pleased with what I have bought  :D

There's also van meuwen, and I've never gone wrong with Wilkinson's range!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

A friend of mine also suggested www.dutchbulbs.co.uk.  They seem good prices too, but anyone had experience with them before?

Wilko are great value, particularly when they have just come in fresh. The other place is Jersey Direct - they have started a mega-deal for bulbs and, if they are anything like the quality of their plug plants, they should be very good.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you live in North London or South Herts, Clockhouse Nursery in Enfield has to be the one of the best value places around for top quality plants, as well as currently having a huge range of bulb varieties.including the more unusual or rarer ones. For example I bought Fur Elise and Marjoletti tulips at £1.99 for 10 tulips which aren't available at most garden centres, whereas other garden centres are now charging £2.49 - £3.99 for 10 for well known common varities. They deliver as well but that's expensive.

Lidll are even cheaper, eg £1.49 for 12 Red Riding Hood tulips, but you are restricted to a few varieties

If you live in North London or South Herts,

The OP lives in Glasgow. ;) This is handy for those in the right area though, as you say. :) It is not far from Crews Hill either, where I used to enjoy visiting the many gardening establishments. :D
