Tomatoes outdoors??
« on: April 18, 2007, 13:18 »
I've made a fleece tunnel for this years outdoor tomatoes, it's been up about 10 days warming the soil. The thing is my tomatoes are getting too big for the greenhouse....would it be madness to plant them under the cloche now or will I be risking the lot? Have checked numerous weather sites and nowhere is mentioning frosts. Should I bite the bullet??? :?  :?

Basically what he's saying is ...
... keep them indoors.  Tom's run the nursery for about 40 years and he reckons it's still too early to plant them out.  He's still worried about frosts and the temperature drops at night, but more so the that latter.

It's gorgeous during the day, but if you're outside at 9 or 9.30 at night it's still pretty nippy.

Well, fwiw, I think we had a bit of a frost here last night - some of the new growth on my horseradish looked a bit scorched this morning, and it dropped to 4C in the GH ovrnight.  All my toms were in propagators in the GH, which keeps them snug (I think - they seem to be growing!), so I wouldn't put them out for a while.

I would nt risk planting out tomatoes yet , if they are to be grown in pots finally then you could plant them in the pots but keep them in unheated GH or coldframe for a while. Young Tomato plants do not like sudden changes in temp , I tried it once, fooled by the warm spring weather, the leaves on the tomato plants turned yellow and blue and never recovered from the chill. While plants that went out later flourished .

Weather lady's still talking about it here in the Midlands, think we had a touch last night, wouldn't risk it Aggie

My greenhouse is going from 42degC to 2 degC at the moment so I'm keeping my toms in.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

this sounds familiar !!

Agapanthus ... Joy Larkcom say to delay planting out until the soil maintains 10 degs ... and wind protction is essential ... so your fleece tunnel will come in handy
