Nice to be back - hens still bouncing with health etc.

I've inherited a small field - 2.4 acres ish.  Its in the Midlands - I wonder where I would start to advertise it to use as a chicken farm..

Can I do that on this site?

 :)xx

Hi Nerdle  :)  Nice to hear from you  :)

Not sure about the field, but I'll refer your question to John.  We don't allow advertising on the forum, but he may know how to go about such things.

You could try a boarding service, looking after people's chooks whilst they are on hols :D. Advertise on Google for that or pets4homes etc. I am not happy with the person I used in the past :(. My birds came back very stressed, apart from one, and lost one in each of the last two times I boarded them out. Three down to one in as many months. :(

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol

Oh dear - sorry to hear that!

I'm lucky - clever auto pop hole door opener, neighbour who checks every day and foscam camera so can see them on perch every night!

A chicken farmer is keen on my field but need to know all regulations etc.  I suppose an established farmer/local council would be best to ask.

Hope the neighbours don't mind the early wake up calls!!!

Well I think you effectively have advertised it in your post :)

We don't let posters advertise for a number of reasons - but if you have land to let for a farmer, I'd suggest you use channels specific to farmers and perhaps classifieds in local newspapers.

It's quite a small parcel of land - 0.97 hectare - enough to free range 2,000 birds which by industry standards is small. Maybe viable for a niche market though like pasture fed hens.

You posted as I was replying:

Be careful - it can be a minefield renting land.  We had a shake of the hand agreement and when it ended it nearly got really nasty. Cost us hundreds of pounds in wall repairs. Trouble is, lawyers are so expensive and the rents so low.

A chicken farm will have buildings, unless these are moveable you'll need planning permission I thinkl

Definitely you or he will need planning permission for buildings for the chooks.  I'd talk to local council and DEFRA for their input.

Some people are scared of DEFRA, but talk to them nicely and you'll be fine.  They are a mine of information!  What was the field used for previously?
