new potatoes
« on: December 17, 2017, 16:34 »
Evening All

I have been browsing the seed catalogues, as you do at this time of year, with a mind
to buying my spuds. The thing is, they they are priced by the kg, and what I would
like to know, just how many, roughly, do you get for a kg. I should say its new potatoes
I'm after. Any advice will be warmly welcomed. Cheers.
keep on digging

As a rough guide you'd get 10-12 potatoes per kilo. Obviously seed potatoes vary greatly in size/weight but that amount is more or less what you can expect. Salad varieties tend to be slightly on the smaller side in my experience

Hope that helps  :D

I agree with the estimate of tubers above, and I tend to work on the basis that 1kg of seed tubers for salad spuds will do about 3 yds square on the plot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

to get my head round this topic and to give my  reply not sure what you need to know is it the size of seed or planting or the amount you mite expect from planting to harvest

and by the way the other replies are spot on also have you any preference in seed varieties yet?

not sure what you need to know

The question was how many seed potatoes you get per kg when you order seed of new potatoes from the catalogues.

I always tend to order too many seed spud's but usually find room somewhere for the extras.

I always grow my new potatoes in sacks so I needn't worry about ground space for these, leaving the ground free for mains. Last year I bought 2x 2kg bags of earlies. From memory, they needed 22 ish sacks to use them up. Usually 3 to 4 to a sack (I tried the odd ones with 5 in as an experiment).

Assuming 3 planted per bag, that makes around 16 spuds per kg, but as said they do vary in size.  :D

One thing I'm going to try this coming year is going to a potato fair. You can pick as many as you want hence no need to worry about weights etc. I intend to get something out of the ordinary to try, a variety not in the catalogs.
