I too would go for the soil as bagged compost does deteriorate very quickly. Looks a good deal with the bagged one too
Arhh to late. I may order some topsoil to add to it but it will be a pain (literally) to carry up.

Hi CC, I've been looking at the volumetrics of your project.
15 x 6ft = 8.3sq.m. and you want 10cm depth of compost/top soil. This means you need about 830 litres for each terrace.
Hope this helps. (Hope sums are correct as it's only my 2nd post!)
Looks about right

You'd have to carry the rotavator too 😉 I tend to use a fork myself

One bag of topsoil for one, possibly two terraces arriving Thursday. Will add before Rotovating. Only used half the compost so far.

Two of 3 terraces have had a ton bag of topsoil and 900 litres of compost put on top of thin topsoil. BUT I may have disaster on my hands. One of the concrete posts is moving. This is a terrace which has had the most loose soil thrown behind it.  Any thoughts?  It is out by 53 millimeters over 800 millimetres. I think I should wait quite a while before adding topsoil and compost to it. Maybe 6 months or sort it out I.E. dig it out a real disaster.

Hmm didn't like to say before but the concrete boards are gravel boards not really a retaining wall which is what you're hoping for. Really hope it stabilises for you

There's going to be nearly 2 cubic yards of wet soil pushing against the 4" fence posts, it's only a matter of time before it ends in tears, gabions would have been a better choice if a proper wall wasn't an option.

It's not much help to the OP but that's really not safe at all.

When I cut away the clay before I.E. vertical walls they have stayed in place for years. Not crumbled at all for years. The last terrace had the most, by a long way of loose soil against it.  Once it packs down virtually all the weight is going down and not against the boards. Of course that's a long way off and probably to late.
In reference to the gravel boards I have seen loads of very old terraces made the same way. These gravel boards have steel bars running down them. The gravel boards are not the problem that one post is. It is the center one and is therefore taking the most weight.
Even if stabilises I may still have to sort it. As you can see it don't look right.

Gabions were never an option they take up to much room leaving me little room for the garden. Wood was the other option but I wanted something that would last.
