O right - whys that then?
-
 i dont remember why....thats why it was a short answer.
im sure someone who knows why will be along soon.

I asked this before when I was planning to get some chooks and I'm sure that the answer was yes on here. But it will need to be changed frequently as it doesn't absord as much moisture as hay/straw.
I may yet be proved wrong though :? :?

here's the thread i read it on

I read on here (when i was looking for information on keeping hens) that you shouldn't use hay either, as hens are prone to eat it and there is a risk of impacted crop.
-
i thought that was straw!! i get confused easily!!!

Absolutly right FH :!: Straw is for bedding hay is for eating but only if you have teeth
I know a few people who use shredded paper with sucess, but you have to be careful not to let the chooks have any sellotape or they might steal your identity
-
lol oh blimey that one cracked me up!! thinking of the chickens stealing my identity with the sellotape hee hee
-
I use it if I run out of straw its ok but I've found it can stick a bit to the eggs, and they like to eat a bit

Don't use shredded paper if you have white chickens because they end up blue
I've heard or read that the ink is supposed to actually ward off creepy crawlies.
I've used shredded paper and be warned, if it gets wet and then sets, its a beggar to clean out. It goes like concrete.
-
Thank you for all the advice.
I think i am going to give shredded paper a go. i will let you all know how i go on with it.
The coop is very very nearly finished, Andy has done a really good job of it, the chooks will be living in luxury. :) I will take a couple of pics tomorrow as ive heard you all like photos!
