I always save me peas for next year.
Just let some pods turn brown on the plant and then pick them off. The peas inside will be nice and dry and ready to pop in an envelope, simple.

Hi All, Im trying to save my Broad Beans seeds for next season. How long do I leave them on the plant for? Also when I store them should it be in the pod or do I take them out of the pods.
Thanks

We just hoik them off the plant when they look dry, shell them and pop them in a brown envelope.

They'll be fine that way, but they should stay dry, as otherwise they'll rot. I think the ones you have saved from the start on a plant will possibly be better producers, but that's only because I read it somewhere years ago. Apparently runner beans should have their seed saved from a plant which hasn't been picked from (you leave one plant untouched), but I can't see why, and never bother picking and choosing!

There's no real science needed, all these beans and peas don't mind being chucked around, and sometimes, I think they enjoy it!

Leave them on the plant as long as possible.  But if you leave them too long the pods start to split and they do what they are meant to do naturally and scatter the seeds on the ground.  I bring the pods indoors, dry for a month or so till I can be bothered to shell them and store the seeds in paper envelopes.  I store the envelopes indoors till next year even though they should be stored cool and dry. It makes no difference as far as I can see.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.
