Aubergine help
« on: August 22, 2016, 23:45 »
Need advice on whats wrong with my aubergine plants. They were patio seeds, but i planted them them in the greenhouse border with my tomatoes. They get flowers but they turn brown and drop off, have fed them and given them a shake in case they are not getting pollinated or should i use a paint brush. Never grown them before so do not know what to expect.

yeah first time I have done aubergine and exactly the same is happening to my plants. Like yours in my poly tunnel with the tomatoes. The one time a fruit did set it seemed to kill the plant? :ohmy:

It's lack of pollination. I've always had trouble with them in previous years, so this year was 'one last try'  ::)

The one planted in the greenhouse - no fruit set! Yet the same variety in pots that are outside all the time the weather is good - lots of fruit have set  :)

Thanks for the replys and sorry Mrs Bean for hijacking your thread a little bit here... :blush: ;)

Growing outside seems to be the answer.....

I still have flowers on my plants is it worth sticking them outside this late in the season? (they are in builder buckets so easy to move)

Yes, I would - though keep an eye on overnight temperatures and bring them in, if a cold one is forecast.

The other factor with lack of fruit set with aubergines in adequate humidity so consider an increase in watering. Right over the plants is best to increase humidity levels.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

Thanks for replies. To late i think to up root them to pots now. Will try growing outside next year. We live and learn, so glad for so many knowledgeable people on here. Will give them a drench of water and see what happens.
