Why are my tomato skins tough?

I have grown Gardeners Delight for a number of years with no problems, but this year the skins are very tough.  I am sure someone out there will know what has caused this and offer a solution for the future.

Not easily, I'd think. The skin is the protecting layer of the fruit and just like ours will change by exposure to diff environmental and weather conditions, water and mineral content in a way of deffence. Extremes of weather too cold, too much sun can cause the skin to toughen up.
