spring onion seed and rocket seed
« on: April 08, 2012, 21:11 »
Hi there

How long does it take for spring onion seed and rocket seed to germinate?  I cant find my seed box at the min, temporarily missing, like most things in my house.  I started them off in the coldframe, but it has been so cold hasnt it, maybe too cold.  I sowed them on 2nd April.  PS. For successional sowing how long do you leave it?  I am thinking to sow direct next time too as gonna be so busy.

Thanks
Amanda

generally 3 weeks or so minimum for germination for me so no panic yet!!

I tend to sow a lot at the same time as they keep well in the soil - i probably do 2 maybe 3 sowings with a large one back end of the season to overwinter so i have them early the following season.

I have only ever sown them direct and most seem to germinate fine

where as im the opposite to gazza i cant seem to get spring onions to germinate in the open ground - but have successfully geminated them in the greenhouse (it took around 2 weeks). I also have never grown rocket.

Just checked and I sowed some rocket on 31st March in the greenhouse and it's through already.

Because I like a year-round supply I grow all my spring onions in pots and they take about 2 weeks to germinate. Simply scatter seed on compost in a 9 inch pot and leave to grow. They can be stuck in any spare corner of the plot and require no attention apart from watering.

Okay I'll chill!! Im too curious!  I wondered why my leeks werent taking, and turned out I just needed to adjust conditions, soon as I followed instructions on here they popped up.  I like the reassurance !  Dissapointed in the rocket though didnt realise it grew so slowly.

thanks bazh
