Store onions - peeled?
« on: August 07, 2017, 08:17 »
Morning,

Just a quick question in the hope I have not made a big error!

Had problems storing onions the last couple of seasons, had the bright idea of cleaning them up a bit this year so the skin forms clean and I can properly inspect for rotten of bruised bits.

Now I read I can find no mention of this – is this due to yield or will the outer skins now not dry if I leave them sheltered for a few weeks.

To be clear, will freshly pulled onions that have had the outer skin removed down to a clean white surface dry and store?

Cheers

Lew

Not sure they will for as long as they would have done with the protective covering still on them, but if you have not gone down too far they will dry off enough to last a month or so. More important is that the neck of the bulbs have fully dried before you put them away imho

Never go down to the white skin , you can remove a tatty brown skin after drying to get to a clean brown skin .

Best not to pull onions as you can break the roots and let in rot spores before the onion has dried , put a prong under the onion and lift with as much root as possible then you can crumble a bit of soil off before leaving to dry.

Not sure if yours will be ok as I don't know how much of the outer layers you've taken off. Usually I just let them dry out, rustle off the loose brown skin then I cut the roots off. Use any thick-necked ones first as they don't tend to keep.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Only take off loose dried skins. Look at your onions every couple of weeks and rub them in your hands to loosen dried skins. this will also discover any that are soft.

We find its better to put the bags of chopped onions into a sturdy carrier bag to eliminate the slight taint we used to get on other stuff in the freezer
