Grow Your Own / Re: Renting a garden
« Last post by Anton on March 24, 2024, 14:37 »
Well the owner has gone off on holiday (honeymoon) so I have not met him yet but I met the prospect fellow gardener who is a nice Spanish lady and the owner will be back in two weeks.
Starting preparing the site as there is a lot of rubbish there (plastic  sheets and so on - Spanish lady said the previous tenant grew strawberries!).
Anyhow, I have just noticed that the plot I will be working is full of small stones (see photo). Any advice you may have about this would be welcome.

I've never heard anyone say anything definitive about this. I just bung them in.

Cold overnight wind/frost frazzled the new growth on my roses - must have been nasty out, that's for sure.
Still cool and breezy but it is sunny, looks nice through the window, but not when you go out in it!!

I've looked online and cant seem to get a definitive answer about sunflowers, does it matter which way you plant the seeds? Pointy end in compost first or round end? Or flat or on their side? Or doesnt it matter? I was going to sow my giant ones indoors in the next week

General Gardening / Centipede/millipedes
« Last post by Nobby1969 on March 24, 2024, 11:44 »
Hi All
Hope everyone is well on this beautiful spring morning.
New to site and was looking for some advice)info.
I have planted a few (10) onion sets last week ,a bit early I know for Glasgow area .
Had a wee poke about and decent roots have started . Noticed lots of small curled up worm type creatures on closer inspection look like centipede/ millipede. My concern is that they are congregated all over the onion set ,are they likely to cause damage. ? I have included a photo. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I did put some beef short ribs and the smaller spuds in the slow cooker yesterday but by the time it was done I didn't really want it. I always think it's a waste of good food to eat it when I feel like that so I had a cheese sandwich instead.  Trying again today.

The Hen House / One hen being bullied
« Last post by AbbyB on March 24, 2024, 01:43 »
Hello all,

For the past few weeks our hens have started bullying the same hen. Her back is all scratched up and her feathers are gone. We have the Durvet anti-cannibalism spray, but they aren't really pecking at her, they are more jumping on top of her and scratching her. She doesn't necessarily have any open wounds, but we do have wound spray.

We have had this flock for a year and haven't had any problems except for losing some (to our dog :( ) . We let them free range occasionally but obviously not all the time because of our dog, and when I closed up the coop tonight I noticed they were all sleeping in the same side of the coop but she was sleeping by herself, so she is definitely isolated.

Someone I know who has a chicken farm said she could have a calcium deficiency but I don't know how to handle this because it's my first time dealing with one being bullied, especially since they are scratching and not biting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Weekly rummage through the odds and ends drawer in the freezer (a.k.a dumping ground of all leftovers, extra ingredients and who knows what else) turned up a small tub of chilli.  There were also cooked beans, corn tortillas and grated cheese in there, so scavenged a meal of cheese and chilli quesadillas plus refried beans.

The fridge had some salad bits that needed using, so they went on the side  :)

I reckon I get at least 1 main meal for us both and a couple of lunches for 1 of us out of that drawer every week and it stops the fridge getting filled up with bits that don’t go together.
