Is it too late?
« on: July 22, 2007, 23:07 »
I've just had a massive clear out on the allotment. I pulled all my peas up as the pods were mostly deformed and the plants were really yellowed. My french beans were a total non starter so they went too, along with celeriac, leeks, chard and all manner of things!
So, with all this room, is it too late to sow more? I like most things, but would like to try more peas and spinach if possible?
I also watched GW the other night and Carol Klein was talking about sowing chicory and fennel which I love. I went to my (very good) garden centre yesterday and they had none of either.
Could anyone recommend a good source for seeds?

Thanks

Fletch

On Gardener's Question Time on Radio 4 today, Anne Swithenbank and Pippa  Greenwood recommended a late sowing of French Beans. Might be worth a try.

Drastic indeed. My garden was flooded a month ago, when Sheffield got it (my lottie is an extension of the garden) and has never really recovered. It hasn't stopped raining since, although is a bit drier now.
Some things are doing reasonably well, but most just had to go.
I'm hoping I can still get a few crops this year.

Try Marshalls. They are advertising their "Autumn" collection. Quite a few options including Chicory and Fennel
Ah well ! There is always next year !

I just ordered some autumn peas from marshalls and they are now sitting comfotably in seed trays with compost waiting to sprout and be big enough to cope with the ground I have.  Like fletch my ground was flooded a month ago but has never really dried out and after my march sown peas rotted in wet soil I thought I'd try putting them in as seedlings to give them a head start.  I'm putting them where my spuds went and am planting spinach where the peas were.  Got an ok but not prolific harvest of peas, am hoping for better from these autumn ones.
