can anyone tell me catagorically whether it is wrong to use aluminium lids on jars holding preserves - either jam or chutney?
I have been given some new glass jars but the lids are aluminium scre tops witha  plastic coated paper disk liner
I realise taht the acidity can stain / corrode aluminium pans but what about lids

I know there has been hint at links with aluminium and alzheimers,  and that aluminium can inhibit the parathyroid gland which can then lead to osteoporosis.
We try to avoid using too much of it, glass or stainless steel saucepans in our house.

I get the greaseproof lining from old cereal packets, draw around the jar lid and then cut it out but a bit wider than the drawn line, then put this over the jar after filling and tighten the lid so it protects it from the acid of vinegar etc. and stops tainting the contents and prevents attack of the lid from the acid in the vinegar.
