Strawberry runners
« on: September 07, 2011, 18:54 »
This is the second year for some strawberry plants I had in a grow bag.  I have put the runners into 3" pots which have rooted so have lots of lovely new strawberry plants.  Thing is, I want to put them into grow bags next year, haven't got room in the garden, and wondered if they would overwinter ok in the pots.  I can either leave them outside and cover with fleece - which is what I did with the old plants last winter, or put them in a covered alleyway which is reasonably light or leave them in the garage which is not so light.

any suggestions as to best course of action and will they survive in the pots OK?

I wouldn't put them in the garage as the lack of light will not do them any good.

I'd leave them outside and double fleece them if it's going to be particularly cold - their roots will be a little more vulnerable in pots than in the soil.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I live in Kent which is only a hop accross from Essex and I always leave my rooted  runners  outside in pots over winter. They have never come to any harm.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Thanks very much for this, I will leave them tucked up in fleece against the wall so hopefully they will be well protected.
