Summer Raspberries - Too Late?
« on: May 10, 2018, 11:00 »
Hello all,

I am looking at rearranging my allotment a tad.  One element would be to plant a couple of new rows of summer fruiting raspberries.  have I left it too late for this year, in order to get fruit for next year?

I do have a row of raspberries that I would like to move or replace with the new rasps but I dont want to go a year with no fruit (kids would be gutted!)

I am based in Portsmouth UK.

I reckon you could plant new raspberries, to fruit next year, as long as you keep them watered. Quite a few places sell them in pots of 3 or 4 plants, which can be soaked and separated before planting out.

IMO now is a bit late to be moving raspberries from the existing rows, though.

If you can take any runners from your present canes NOW and pot them up to grow on then you should be able to start a new row at no cost to yourself. I did that a couple of years back, took out the old ones in late autumn, planted the runners deep in well rotted manure and new compost, watered them in, fed them in spring and have had a couple of years of bumper crops.

Up here the soil hasn't really had chance to warm up, so my new rasps canes have been slow in showing any more growth from the viable buds they had on planting. As I said in another post, I think many of us will be late in harvesting this year but as long as we end up with something to eat, I don't mind.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have been looking at Glen Ampel and Tulameen but am struggling to find a supplier that has any plants  available now. I want between 12 - 16 of each.
