Protecting new grass from Wood Pigeons?
« on: April 10, 2018, 18:20 »
In a while I will be seeding about 0.3A of "flowering lawn mix" over some rotavated soil and I wondered how much of a problem the Wood Pigeons are going to be until it is established?

We have (at the moment) about a dozen Wood Pigeons resident in our mainly rural area and they sweep across the bare soil a couple of times a day in small gangs and couples.

The mix I intend to put down is a broad selection of Scottish Native flowering plants and some slow growing grasses. It is the sort of thing you mow a couple of times at the beginning of the season, leave alone (and walk on it anyway) for July-August then mow again once the seeds are set.

I was thinking of sowing the whole lot in one go on the assumption that they will stuff themselves stupid as it comes up but possibly not be able to eat the whole lot. If I sow it in stages, they will simply treat it as their own personal "cut and come again" salad bar.

Am I being hopelessly optimistic that any will survive at all? Should I prepare to use temporary netting? If so, what do I use to support it?

Thanks in advance for the advice, opinions and recommendations.
