Cut the Cord of Electrical Trimmer or Lawn Mower
« on: February 26, 2018, 17:10 »
Has anyone accidentally cut through their electric hedge trimmer or lawn mower cord? Any solutions to preventing this (apart from the obvious buying a battery or petrol! :0)

Done it once. That was enough (thank heavens for RCDs)

If the orange wire is not obvious enough, it can be made a little harder to not spot by buying some white plastic piping, cut into half lengths or shorter (depending which lengths you get) then temporarily remove the plug, thread through the lengths of pile and reattach the plug.  Masking tape and a lump of pipe insulation on the wire to keep the plastic layer at the business end of the wire.   The plastic bits make it a little harder to use but nothing unmanageable while the white makes it more noticeable and having to manage them although not difficult does keep them in mind and therefore present in the consciousness as needing to be considered.

Many years ago a neighbour borrowed an electric mower from MRs HGB while I was away at sea and cut the wire.  When I eventually got home I found the cut 'repaired' with badly wrapped insulating tape that didn't wholly cover the metal wire.  Needless to say that neighbour never got to borrow anything at all ever again!

I have an electric hedge cutter, and always drape the cord over my shoulder. Start nearest the plug and work away from it, so you are continually pulling on the cord as you go along, and don't have any loops hanging over the hedge. I did a little mowing with an electric last year, and although slightly more difficult, the same applies, always work at right angles, to the plug, moving  away from the plug with each row, again with cord over shoulder if possible.
