canker in chickens
« on: September 07, 2011, 16:56 »
Does anyone out there have any idea how to treat canker in chickens as I believe one of mine has it?  My vet wants a fortune to treat and bring in for a consoltation. Wormed and not eating very well and has white in back of mouth. Any advice please

This thread talks about canker, but it is dated 2008 so I don't know whether the information is now out of date.    It may however be of use if there isn't any up to date info available.

Pigeon canker can be very contagious once in a chicken flock, so you need to check all of your girls. Do you know anyone that keeps pigeons? Have a chat with them as it is far easier to get non prescription medication for pigeons than it is for hens, so there may be a product on the market that will treat it. Needless to say, any treatment available is likely not to be licensed for poultry so withdrawal of eggs is a must if you are not sure.
Other than that, let your vet confirm that it is canker and ask him for a prescription - the law states that you don't have to purchase medication from your vet, you can go anywhere as long as you have a prescription - and medication is a LOT cheaper online than at your vets.

The information is still valid. ;)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Have ordered meds off the internet and hope it arrives soon and not too late for my poorly bird. She is only eating a small amount but still going. Should I treat all the birds or just the ill one do you think. Others showing no signs of illness at all as I have checked.

Check their throats - get someone to hold the hen whilst you shine a torch down the throat. If there's no sign of any coating, then I wouldn't bother, but check regularly for the next few weeks.

Hope she makes it through - good luck.
