I never wash sloes, just pick out any bits of dried leaf or twiggy bits (or bugs of course )

Sugar is essential as sloes are so bitter. Bite one and see if you never have ... everyone should try this once  ;) Carefully, mind

I just tip the sloes into a sink full of water all the twigs and leaves float as well as the sloes with a maggot* inside them, this can all be scooped off with a sieve. Just a quick roll in a towel to dry them and into the gin they go.

* if you leave the odd maggot in it helps the gin last longer. :)

After the total derth of sloes in Suffolk last year, I wasn't going to risk waiting till after the frosts to pick this year, just in case some other b****r got them before me!

I have tried both the freezing method and the direct soaking.  Prefer the latter; the freezing process mushed the berries up too much, and the resulting gin was overly cloudy and had thick sediment.  I think I wasted some of the precious liquid in trying to salvage what I could.

well we've had a couple of frosts and i've discovered a new lane that has absolutely loads of sloes. So many in fact that i could have filled several buckets full :D. However i wouldn't be able to afford the gin needed   :tongue2: so only took enough for one bottle.

Question - which are the best sloes to pick, the big blue ones or the ones that are beginning to go almost shiny black?

From what i could see they go blue, then the shiny black colour and then they shrivel.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I think the riper the sloes are the easier they mix with the gin . With the bloom on is good but black and shiny is better.
