Strange "growth" on a rose.

MODS - if needed, please move this to another forum.

I mentioned in a previous post that this year has thrown up some unusual sights on various shrubs etc. Today I noticed this on a Rosa rubrifolia and think it's a hip that has burst open due to the hot weather. Is that what it is?

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It's Rose Pincushion gall.

Ah. Something at the very back of my mind made me think of something like that, but it doesn't seem to cause any harm to the plant so I'll leave it alone.
