Broad Beans -failed already?
« on: April 13, 2018, 22:36 »
I planted broad beans seed a few weeks ago and nothing has shown yet. I thought they were hardy and would survive the bad weather. Should I start again?

Did you sow them direct into the soil or inside in pots? If outside they’ve still got time, in pots I’d have expected some sign of life but there’s still time. Try having a very gently poke round with the end of a plant label, remember they put their root out first.

As Snows said, they do put out quite a long root first followed by the stem which I remember from schooldays. At the moment the soil has only just begun to warm up so they may just be waiting, but have a look and see if they're ok beforehand.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I sowed my broad bean seed around a couple of weeks ago in the greenhouse and there looking good so we will need to plant them in the allotment as soon as the grounds dry

I never sow direct into the ground, I've lost too many to mice so now I start them off in greenhouse and plant out when there's a couple of inch of top growth

In addition to what has been said already, soak the seeds for a few days to swell up and (if old seed) place between two layers of damp kitchen paper and when they germinate sow into pots.

I had another check yesterday and quite a lot have now come through. I've planted some more seeds in the gaps to see what happens.
