What type of lavender?

I wanted to put some lavender in the front garden but have realised that there is a huge numbe of varieties. Is there much difference? I would just like something hardy that flower well and can fill a fairly reasonable size space

If you want a good, easy care lavender, both Hidcote and Munstead are good starting points.  They flower profusely and smell wonderful.

Hidcote is compact and has deep purple flowers.  Munstead is taller and a bit paler.  The garden centres should be full of them and they often in with the herbs, so usually on a multi- buy deal  :)
