No thanks for the unuseful suggestions then?  ;) :tongue2:

Update: We made a batch yesterday in the slow cooker which was put out in the garage to avoid the smell in the house. Started it on the high setting then turned it down to auto and let it tick away for about 8 hours in total pouring the liquid fat off a couple of times. We got two decent pots of lard out of it. Perhaps it could have cooked longer, we can try that next time.

Thanks again for all your help! :D

I can only think it is similar to rendering down suet.  For the last couple of years I've got about £10:00 worth of suet from the butcher, (I can just carry it) and render it down for the birdy cakes in the winter.

I have a story (true) about suet, but this is a family site !       Cheers,   Tony.

I have given up worrying about the smell - disappointment is more of an issue.  I render smaller quanties of bacon and pork fat down occasionally, and when I do, I find a hungry husband in the kitchen looking hopeful .....   ::)

I think we'll have to get used to the aroma yet madcat. On Sunday afternoon though, it must have been interesting for the sunseekers in the area as the smell of that fat rendering was competing with the smell of its marinaded leg cooking slowly on the barbecue.

;)
