holly tree
« on: December 16, 2017, 17:37 »
we had to dig up two of our holly trees about a month ago to rebuild a wall we planted them in another location in the ground till we completed the wall

everything seemed alright when we replanted but further on the leaves have started to go brown and they look as though they mite be dying of I just wondered if they will survive the winter and if so what would be the best way to replant

I have no idea when the best time of year is for lifting holly.... would have thought maybe autumn or spring.

A pity you had to move them without a chance to check before hand - needs must.

I would be inclined to leave your two in the ground as they are with roots covered but they'll probably need a good few sloshes of water (when the daytime temperature is above freezing) if they are to stand a chance of surviving. Wind scorch wont help keep leaves alive.

If you have any berries on them try dropping a few on a clear patch of soil - you may get some new ones. They grow reasonably quickly once they start. Here they grow like weeds - always in the wrong place as they give quite dense shade (not good for the veg plots).... and they appear in hedges too.

Best of luck keeping yours going - I'd wait to early spring to move them again if you need to.

Near us, we have a holly tree growng on the branch of an old oak tree.
Seed must have fallen on the branch and germinated, probably a good 3ft high (holly tree).
